THE FIRST ECONOMIC REMEDIATION REPORT
An unprecedented initiative for the country made its début on the second day of RemTech Expo: the first Economic Report on the Remediation Market, developed by RemTech as a business and policy instrument to give scope, rules and perspective for a strategic sector of regional regeneration. This document is based on regulatory analysis, economic-financial datasets, site mapping and over twenty interviews with public and private stakeholders, therefore producing a stable and updatable “barometer” for the sector.
The Promoting Committee
The strength of this task lies in the Promoting Committee, which Riccoboni Group is part of along with CISA, Greenthesis, Icaro Ecology, I.T.S. Ecologia, Idea, Fedele di Donato, Semataf – Gruppo Ecoeridania, Assoreca, Edison Regea, Teseco, BSA – Gruppo Iren, Geos Group, HERAmbiente – ACR Reggiani, Serveco, OICE, ambiente, and Xodo Costruzioni. This professional industrial team integrates multi-utilities, general contractors, engineering companies, environmental platforms and representative associations: the alliance required to organise scattered data, to validate methodologies and to direct investments towards measurable and verifiable actions.
Sector figures
The report puts a figure for the first time on a sector often seen only as a cost: about 3.5 billion in revenue a year, over 1.3 billion in added value and 23,000 specialist workers; there are roughly 88,000 employees in the expanded ecosystem of environmental businesses. This is the snapshot of an industry that affects the economy and quality of life, but which still suffers from fluctuating demand and complex procedures.
Hence certain priorities: a nationally standardised pricing framework (to compare tenders and quotes), more streamlined procedures with clear regional direction and rewards for people who invest in technologies and skills. In other words: better quality of public spending, less risks for investments, and faster construction sites. Legality is indicated as a competitive advantage: sharing the legality rating, internal checks according to Italian Legislative Decree 231 and enrolment on White Lists to set standards and to keep unqualified operators away.
The supply chain is mature
In terms of solutions, the supply chain is mature: alongside traditional measures, “on-site” technologies with a lower impact are growing, which reduce times, movements and inconveniences. It is a sign of a market that innovates, integrates design, execution and monitoring and seeks to generate measurable economic and environmental benefits.
With this first edition, RemTech and its promoters are providing institutions, businesses and financiers with a permanent dashboard to plan measures, build skills and attract capital on transparent pipelines: understand to decide, decide to regenerate. It is the start of a shared pathway which, edition after edition, will make the remediation market more understandable, competitive and sustainable.
According to Commissioner Gen.B. CC Giuseppe Vadalà “This report finally puts an economic slant on what for years has been seen only as a cost: a sector that moves resources, generates skilled labour and improves the health of regions. The numbers tell us that remediation is about industry, public protection and urban regeneration. We now have to turn data into concrete decisions: tenders that reward competence and integrity, clear procedures and definite timeframes, with public-private direction capable of bringing projects into construction earlier and better. It is a shared responsibility between administrations and businesses: we are therefore restoring a future to places, safety to communities and trust to citizens”.
As underlined by Angelo Riccoboni, the Group’s President and CEO, “The first Economic Report on the Remediation Market represents a fundamental step for our country, because it finally recognises and quantifies the importance of a key sector for regional regeneration and environmental sustainability. Here at Riccoboni Holding, we are proud to be part of this professional industrial community which promotes innovation, competence and responsibility. We believe that transparent data, simplified procedures and clear governance are essential elements to support growth in the sector, to attract qualified investments and to accelerate necessary measures. The report sends a strong message: to turn remediation management from a perceived cost into a real economic and environmental opportunity, we need a standardised national framework, a rewarding policy for people who invest in technologies and training, and a shared commitment to legality and quality. We are convinced that this initiative is a significant part of a sustainable and strategic growth path for the remediation sector, capable of generating economic value, environmental protection and social development for the benefit of the whole country”.
